Richard is specialised in transport law, commercial law and the related fields of law.
As a lawyer Richard handles inter alia cargo claims, charter party disputes, collisions, wreck removal cases, salvage cases, limitation of liability cases, general average cases, maritime related personal injury claims, disputes under ship sale contracts, wharf disputes, etc.
Richard’s often international clients include P&I, H&M and Charterer’s Liability underwriters, ship owners, charterers, crew managers, terminals and stevedores, etc.
In addition, Richard acts as an arbitrator in (national and international) arbitration cases inter alia at the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI).
Richard graduated from the Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2000 with a (cum laude, 9) thesis on maritime liens. He started his career as maritime lawyer in 2001 with Van der Wiel Advocaten in Rotterdam.
In 2004 Richard successfully completed the Grotius Specialisation Course on Transport Law.
Richard publishes articles in specialist literature in the field of transport law and procedural law.
Richard was a correspondent for the Dutch Journal on Litigation in Practice (Praktisch Procederen), is a co-author of the maritime law books Capita Zeerecht (Kluwer, 2004) and Aspects of Maritime Law (Kluwer International, 2008) and frequently published in the Dutch Journal of Transport and Law (TVR).

Rechtsgebiedenregister
Richard staat in het rechtsgebiedenregister van de Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten met de volgende hoofd- (en sub) rechtsgebieden geregistreerd: Transport- en handelsrecht. Op grond van deze registratie is hij verplicht elk kalenderjaar volgens de normen van de Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten tien opleidingspunten te behalen op ieder geregistreerd hoofdrechtsgebied.
