Marieke began her career in the maritime department of Nauta Dutilh in Rotterdam and, within more than 25 years, developed into an experienced qualified lawyer with an advisory and litigation practice and specialized in commercial contracts in the field of shipbuilding and repair, refitting and conversion of sea-going and inland vessels, with a focus on (super)yachts. Marieke’s clients include both owners and shipyards, which enables her to analyse legal matters and issue from different perspectives and interests of parties involved.
Marieke known for her pragmatic and solution-driven approach. She combines a sharp legal mind with strategic litigation experience in court proceedings and arbitration but negotiates without losing sight of the commercial interests of the parties. Through her training as a registered mediator, Marieke has also acquired the necessary skills for alternative dispute resolution.
Her career includes partner positions at various leading law firms. In addition, Marieke spent several years as Head of Legal Department in a corporate environment, where she was the trusted advisor to the Board of Directors and shareholders for resolving legal and compliance issues, in close collaboration with internal and external advisors. This has brought her an in depth understanding of the interests of clients and the dynamics of legal issues within a company.
Finally, as a board member of UNUM Transport Arbitration & Mediation, Marieke actively contributes to the further development of arbitration and mediation within maritime and commercial practice in the Netherlands. She is also a member of the ballot committee of WISTA, an organisation that promotes the interests of female professionals working in the maritime and commercial sector.
